Over the past few years, Cornell has put in place several new barriers to the Greek system. Pledges are no longer able to cancel their meal plans to join Greek ones, and chapter charges, including new member fees, meal plans, social fees, and dues, are no longer transmitted over the Bursar, making it much harder to utilize financial aid monies and creating a looming delinquency issue as it falls on the house to self-enforce payments, and struggling to meet large financial obligations when they come at the start of each semester. Because of these policies, and in particular the policy regarding meal plans for new members, it has become much harder to attract freshman and sophomores to the house during rush, as the $1500 charge that is traditionally used to pay for their initiation, meal plans, and fees is now an out-of-pocket expense that comes on top of a $5000 semesterly dorm rent, a $4000 dining hall meal plan, and other costs associated with being a student. This has been reflected in overall rush numbers, as the number of annual rushes (across the entire fraternity system) has declined significantly over the last five years, from 550 signups in 2016 to just over 300 in the last three cycles.

In 2021, the Psi Chapter instituted a pilot program to waive all new member fees in their first semester. No longer would the financial issues be a factor, especially after pairing this with a promise to remain cheaper than Cornell housing for the entirety of their college experience. Because of this, spring 2021 brought in 16 members, 14 of whom benefitted from the program, and the house was able to more than double in size. The policy was continued into the fall of 2021, when rush does not have a formal process. In the four years since fall rush was introduced at Cornell, the Psi Chapter has never gotten more than four recruits—but in the fall of 2021, we brought in 14 members, nearly doubling in size two semesters in a row.

While clearly successful, we also need it to be sustainable and while the policy should pay for itself over time with increased membership, it has relatively high upfront costs for the undergraduate chapter. We are asking all our members to join us and make a gift of any size to help us permanently strike down one of the largest barriers of entry to Zeta Psi and lead the Cornell Greek system into a more inclusive and accessible future.
